The Most Beautiful Sand Bar in Oahu
The Most Magical Hidden Gem in Hawaii (Where We Got Engaged!)
I can’t believe how many people visit Hawaii but never experience this spot. Honestly, I’d argue it’s one of the most magical places on earth… though I might be a little biased, since it’s where Garet and I got engaged.
Just 30 minutes from Waikiki, tucked away in Kaneohe Bay, you’ll find a sandbar that feels straight out of a dream. The only way to get there is by boat or kayak, and once you arrive you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the lush mountains where Jurassic Park was filmed.
Depending on the tide, the entire experience changes. At low tide, you’ll find endless stretches of pristine sandbar — the perfect hangout spot for a picnic, a float, or just running around barefoot in the middle of the ocean. At high tide, you can snorkel right off your kayak and (if you’re lucky) spot the biggest sea turtles you’ve ever seen gliding gracefully through the water.
Getting There
We always rent our kayaks from Windward Water Sports in Kailua. They’re super friendly, provide dry bags, and you can call ahead to reserve your kayaks and ask them about the tide times (which makes a huge difference in the experience!).
You’ll launch from He‘eia Kea Boat Harbor, which sits right on Kaneohe Bay. From there, it’s a pretty easy paddle out — just don’t forget sunscreen because you’re completely exposed the whole way.
What To Pack
If you want to make a full day of it (which I highly recommend), bring:
A cooler with food, snacks, and plenty of water
A small speaker for music
Snorkel gear (mask + fins if it’s high tide)
Floaties, a football, or anything fun to play with on the sandbar
Reef-safe sunscreen (please, the turtles will thank you 🐢)
It’s the kind of adventure that’s way more fun when you come prepared. We usually pack up a little picnic, play music, and spend hours just soaking it all in.
Respecting the Land + Wildlife
This part is so important. As magical as this place is, it’s fragile. Please leave no trace, pack out everything you bring, and be respectful of the wildlife. The sea turtles are incredible to watch, but don’t chase or touch them — just let them do their thing.
Every time we’ve been out there, it feels like we’re in a completely different world. It’s the type of adventure that fills your soul, makes you slow down, and reminds you how magical Hawaii really is. And if you’re lucky… it might even be where you have one of the most memorable moments of your life, like we did. ❤️
